Using Self Inquiry to find your Authentic Self RESOURCE

Self Inquiry to find your Authentic Self

Your Authentic Self

Embracing your authentic self is fundamental to a happier more fulfilled life. It means making choices that genuinely reflect who you really are at your core.  Your personal values, needs, interests, and desires can be uncovered and you can live your life as your true self rather than conforming to the expectations of others and the pressures that these create when we feel we have to ‘fit into being someone we are not’.

Authenticity is not just about being true to yourself but also about how you represent yourself to the world, ensuring that your external actions align with your internal reality and truths. It’s a critical element for mental wellbeing. That’s because in reality, whether consciously or otherwise you are pretending to be someone you’re not, it is uncomfortable, it feels ’off’ and its frankly exhausting. It can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression. Moreover, when you can act with your own authenticity, you forge deeper and more meaningful connections with others, as relationships built on authenticity are rooted in genuine understanding, trust and mutual respect.

Understanding and acting in accordance with your authentic self also significantly impacts your ability to make decisions in your life and manage its challenges more resiliently. Authenticity guides you in setting your goals and helps you make choices that truly sit well with you, leading to a more satisfying and contented life. A journey of self-awareness and discovery is not just about recognising your abilities and strengths. Your true desires and values, but also in the acceptance that you have faults, failings, vulnerabilities, and unhelpful habits and working towards developing yourself through personal growth. And for most everyone, this is a lifelong journey. Being authentic increases your resilience, allowing you to face life’s challenges with your genuine feelings and values as your guide, like following the true North on a compass to a heartfelt direction in your life. This meaningful journey is a continuous process of introspection, awareness, and growth that is truly your own and introspection, self-inquiry, and self-reflection are key enablers on that journey.

What is Self-Inquiry

Self-inquiry is a powerful tool in coaching that encourages you to delve deeply into your thoughts, emotions, motivations, and actions. It’s about asking yourself thought provoking and probing questions to uncover your true desires, fears, challenges and blockers. This process is not about judging yourself but understanding who you are at your core. It helps you see beyond the surface, identifying patterns and beliefs that you haven’t noticed or have avoided and that may be holding you back. Using this article, you will be guided through on your own journey of self-discovery, helping you to confront and question your inner world. The goal here is to gain clarity and awareness of who you are, so that you can make more conscious more informed choices, and align your actions with your true self, and your deeper needs and desires. That is the path to personal growth and fulfilment. Through self-inquiry, we work together to uncover your authentic path, enabling you to live a life that is truly yours.

Here are 20 self-inquiry questions to get you started and designed to provoke thought and introspection:

When answering these self-inquiry questions, remember to be honest with yourself and open to the answers you find.  Allow yourself to reflect deeply and without judgment or self-criticism. Give yourself the space and time to answer them in comfort and in a place that suits you and your ability to think deeply. You will begin to uncover insights that you will connect with and that will resonate with your true inner self.  You can do this in one go or do a few and allow some reflection and come back to do more. In fact, reviewing these regularly is a helpful and interesting way to see if your thoughts and feelings on any question change over time.

A further tip:  I find a journaling log to be very beneficial for jotting down thoughts, feelings, and any nuggets of insights. It’s a place you can keep going back to and is confidential just for you.  Invest in a reflective journal and keep it just for you to explore and reflect on the many interesting insights you will gain over time.
